Z's Favorite Clothing Designers: Baby Maya

This post begins an occasional series on kids' clothing designers we couldn't live without.

Z, Jeremiah and I all love the handmade clothes made by Baby Maya seamstress and clothing designer Leah Paprock. I have known Leah since childhood, and was surprised to reconnect with her a couple of years ago and discover that she was now making some amazing slings and clothing.

Choice of fabrics, design and construction are all outstanding features of Baby Maya clothing. Her slings combine a comfortable sling with enough extra fabric to nurse discreetly, and come in a variety of batik and Indian fabrics. We would have loved to try one of these when Z was an infant. As for the baby and toddler clothing, what can we say? The construction is excellent and durable, the design clever and arresting, and the resulting clothes, which also come in a variety of fabrics, are truly beautiful. She makes seat covers using the same great fabric colors and textures.

Z owns the colorful batik outfit pictured here, which is also available on Baby Maya's website - it's one of those comfortable, attractive pieces of clothing you just hate to see your child grow out of. It sells for $36 - a high price for those used to Old Navy, but a very reasonable price for clothing of this quality and known wage-slave-free origin. Leah makes all Baby Maya clothing herself and started her business in order to stay at home with her daughter. Since all of her clothing is personally handmade, items are available in limited quantities and do sell out. Be warned: If you take a peek you will probably find something you can't resist!
