After a long winter, kids and families are getting ready to get outside and enjoy Mother Nature. Here are a few adventures close to urban centers that offer a great way to shake off the last remnants of the cold:
The Grove (outside Chicago): This free park just north of the city offers indoor and outdoor fun. Explore the natural prairie, listen for frogs, or go explore the Native American Village and climb inside a real tipi. [Flickr]
The Little Farm in Tilden Park (outside San Francisco): Tilden Park is a huge park in the East Bay with miles of hiking trails, but also The Little Farm, a picturesque farm with cows, goats, sheep and other common farm animals. Great for city dwellers who want the sights, sounds, and smells of a working farm!
Sedgwick County Park (in Wichita, KS): This "largest public park in Wichita" offers miles of walking trails, various playgrounds and ponds for fishing. Best of all, it's free.
Loantaka Brook Reservation (outside New York City): Sometimes you just want to get away from the city. Rent a car and drive over to Morristown, New Jersey for an active day walking and playing among hundreds of acres of woods and parkland.
Fall Creek Falls State Park (outside Nashville): This is a full-day excursion if you’re leaving from Nashville, but it's worth the drive. Make sure you visit the park’s namesake waterfall and if you’d like to stay longer, overnight accommodations are available. [Flickr]
