Food Week Gadgets: The Dripstik

The Dripstik is an inventive device to help your child eat popsicles and ice cream cones with less mess. Each end of the barbell-shaped implement performs its own task. One end has a slot for a popsicle stick, and the other a hole about 1 1/2" in diameter to hold an ice cream cone. Surrounding each is a trough designed to catch drips.

As a popsicle holder, this device has become indispensible to us. Z went from being sheltered from all popsicles to being a popsicle junkie after we had the idea of making yogurt-and-fruit juice popsicles.

These pops started out at about 50/50 yogurt and fruit juice, as in the photo above, but we quickly shifted the ratio to be around 90% yogurt, which means popsicles have about two tablespoons of fruit juice in them. They make a great breakfast treat our three-year-old can eat during that crucial 15 minutes or so when Jenni and I each perform some Z-free parts of our staggered morning routine. We have always added flax seed meal to her yogurt (it's loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, an important consideration for vegetarians, and has a pleasant but mild nutty taste), so we started adding it to her yogurt pops, too.

Probably the best feature of the Dripstik turned out to be the way the flat ends allow for a popsicle or ice cream treat to be set down on the table or even a clean floor for urgent events or non-urgent play. We generally have a fairly limited area of the house in which food is allowed, but the Dripstik has expanded that range a bit for popsicle-eating.

As an ice cream cone holder, the Dripstik helps keep our toddler's hands clean, but little else. Melted ice cream pools in the trough and must be emptied if you really want to keep it from pouring down your child's front, and there are still plenty of creative opportunities to make a huge mess.

The Dripstik has Jenni and I very much at odds regarding adult use. I will begrudgingly admit that using a Dripstik would be convenient around the house when eating a popsicle in the dead of summer, but I would rather do so many things than walk into an ice cream shop, order a cone, and put it in my Dripstik. Sooooo many things. Jenni claims she would, and will, do it.

You can purchase Dripstiks from the manufacturer's website or read customer reviews and buy them on Amazon.com.

We have a four-Dripstik gift pack to give away to a ZRecs reader! To enter to win, comment on this post and tell us how hot it's supposed to be in your area this weekend. All entries which include an email address will be entered to win, and we'll announce a winner on Friday.

Supposed to dip down a little though from the 100s this week to the upper 90s for the weekend!

I'm currently in DC, where it's miserably hot. But this weekend, thank goodness (!), I'll be back home in Kentucky with my family.

Unfortunately, it's supposed to be in the low 90's, and extremely humid. You have to love August!

Here in Seville (Spain) we're being momentarily blessed with 85ºF temepratures, but we expect to be back to our usual 100+ in a couple of days...

With as hot as it is here (100 with 110+ Heat Index) popsicles melt quickly! This would be great to win.

In NW PA we will be in the low 80's. Hopefully with less humidity, since we don't have air conditioning!

Thanks for your great site!

Thrilled to report that we are only expecting highs in the mid-90's this weekend. Most years in August we are looking at 100+ in August. No fears - it's still plenty hot enough for popcycles!

Highs in the 100 degree range here in Austin, TX. I have to say we've had an easy summer until now...but summer's here and won't be leaving for at least 3 more months. We would love to win a dripstick!

It's going to be somewhere between 98 and 100 degrees here in Houston. Add our famous humidity to the mix and it's sure to feel like it's around 110 degrees!

We're not so lucky to have any friends with pools, so having that dripstik to use with a popsicle would be a great way to cool down!

The weather forecast says it's supposed to be in 100+ and cloudy here this weekend. Luckily I'll be someplace cooler!

I have been wondering if these were worth the investment! Thanks for the review!!

Today, it will be 101.
Tomorrow, it will be 100.
Friday and Saturday, it is supposed to be 103+.
Sun, it goes down to 101.

I'm *not* looking forward to this weekend. Too dang hot!!

We're going to have yet more 90+ degree weather here in snowy Minnesota!

I haven't dared to give my 3-yr old twins popsicles yet. Maybe with some Dripstiks, I can!

We are only in the 90's.... with lots of smoke and about 6% humidity, I feel... desiccated...I believe is the word....or... smoked beef jerky.

Love the yogurt-recipe..... now can you do a review on popsicle forms?

I never thought to put flaxseed in yogurt pops.... although I grind it up in a coffee grinder and dump it in everything else.... great ideas.

96-99 degrees here in Tucson, AZ...relatively cool for summer here!

I'd love to win these...I, too have been avoiding popsicles with our 2 year old because of the mess factor, but these sound great!

high 80's to low 90's and still stinking hot!!

i, as an adult, would use one of these and pretend it was for my child. however he is 4 months old, and it is likely that no one will belive me. but you can bet i'll do it anyway!

Upper 90's today and even hotter this weekend is what we have to look forward to. I would love to introduce popsicles to my DD with a Dripstik!

How hot is it going to be in Cleveland?

- hot enough that I'm not even going to bother freezing the popscicles - they'll melt in a minute, anyway.

- hot enough for me to thank god that vinyl car seats aren't in fashion anymore (wanna see my scars from childhood?)

- hot enough that "preheating" the baby pool above wellwater temperature will take about 15 seconds.

- hot enough to hear the corn grow ... oh, wait, that's Indiana.

New to the post but we live in Houston, so HOT, HUMID and Mosquito infested with a heat index in the triple digits is the forecast. It will definitely melt ice cream, popsicles and other frozen treats in mere minutes. My twins would love the opportunity to try out the Dripstik!

We would absolutely love to be entered into this contest. My daughter loves popcycles, but we hate the mess.

It's suppose to be in the high 90's (well over 100 with the head index). We're hoping some rain might cool things off a bit!!

My email is in my bloggy profile. Thanks!! :)

I have no idea how hot or cold it's supposed to be. They waid it would rain today, but it didn't. It cleared up and got sunny and warm.

Those dripsticks look so cool. Of course my little one prefers holding on to the popsicle and chewing the stick. Or she holds the stick and decorates the highchair tray with the popsicle part.

It is about as hot as I have ever known it to be here in this state - my thermostat on the car actually said 102 degrees but with the humidity it is crazy! I have never seen three digits.
