Corduroy Gets A Trim

I sympathize. I have trimmed more than one stuffed animal's eye sockets, but never to such bulging dramatic effect.

Yes, he ended up looking very alarmed, didn't he?

A few days later Z was requesting the same services for another stuffed animal. "We need to trim around Big Bear's eyes so he can see."

My only advice on such matters is to watch the eyes so you don't scratch them. We scratched up Corduroy's a bit (I think you can see this in the last photo) and will probably go in sometime with a Sharpie for a touch-up - NOT in Z's presence.

That's hilarious! So glad to hear that Corduroy can now see clearly. Beary cool!

I was thinking that now he looks just like he does in the book's illustrations. He finally has the wide-eyed wonder look he's supposed to. (How's that for putting a positive spin on it?)

When a stuffed animal's hair matts down around their eyes, it can change their expression dramatically. Consider how in a cartoon drawing, diagonal eyebrows on the outside edges makes someone look loving, whereas diagonal eyebrows on the inside edges makes someone look menacing and angry.

I had a stuffed dog whose face became friendlier over the years due to this phenomenon. When I was little, it made me cry with happiness to look at him. Yes, this sounds like an exaggeration, but it's not. I believe I shed tears for Jesus too during that particular year. Another stuffed animal I detested because he just looked mean (was it one of your Winnie the Pooh bears, Jeremiah?) - his eyebrows had developed the other way.

I have always felt this phenomena was under-reported.

A couple times, after I was old enough to recognize and manipulate the phenomenon, I experimented with cosmetic alterations to improve the stuffed animal's personality. In one case it failed. I always thought of that animal when I saw Grandpa, after that surgery he got to keep his eyelids from drooping. Very alert.
