So your baby bottles, sippy cups, and toddler tableware are BPA-free? (If not, head here.) Given that much of the concern is due to polycarbonate plastic's leaching of BPA when it is heated or becomes worn, it seems to us that there is at least one more product area that the precautionary principle dictates should be BPA-free: bath toys. And while phthalates have been virtually eliminated from infant teethers, pacifiers and such, they are frequently present in bath toys, as well as other toys for older children.
Healthy Child, Healthy World has a good overview of the risks of PVC and phthalates:
As with our previous BPA reporting, we made repeat, mind-numbing calls to customer service reps so you don't have to. What follows is a listing of all major brands producing bath toys, with results broken down into three categories: Products that are free of BPA, phthalates, and PVC; those that are made of the newly popular "phthalate-free PVC"; and those that are known to contain BPA or phthalates. The production of all PVC is harmful to the environment and poses significant hazards to those who produce it, and PVC produces off-gases that include formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals, but we provide all three categories to help you make informed decisions for your own family. Keep in mind that PVC is present in many areas of our lives, many of which currently lack viable alternatives; as with all suspect chemicals, minimizing exposure, rather than eliminating it, is a good goal for most families.Exposure to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics may result in exposure to lead. Lead is used to stabilize PVC. The lead breaks down with exposure to heat and light, and migrates to the surface of the PVC product. Under certain conditions, lead may be present on the surface of PVC products, which can be transferred by hand to mouth behaviors or distributed to surfaces as dust. PVC forms hydrochloric acid when it degrades, which causes a chain reaction that proceeds rapidly to a complete loss of strength. Stabilizers are added to prevent this from occurring. Stabilizers used in PVC are generally metal salts, often lead.
Use of certain plastics may also result in exposure to phthalates. For example, diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) may migrate from foodwraps during storage. It is classified as a probable human carcinogen and also causes chronic health problems, including liver and kidney abnormalities. Breathing dust contaminated by phthalates that have escaped from vinyl products used in the home may be a significant exposure for children. Children spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors breathing close to the floor, and many children’s toys are made out of phthalate-softened vinyl. [Link]

Fisher price baby bathtubs and toy attachments: what is the status on bpa, pvc, phthalate free?
Can you post brand names and specific toys (above and beyond bath toys) within those brands for babies and young children that are bpa/pvc/phthalate free?
Can you explain in more detail about the phthalate free pvc? Is it just as safe and healthy as the bpa/pvc/phthalate free products?
I am a long-time lurker, but this is my first post, and I wanted to THANK YOU for all the wonderful information and hard work you do to help keep parents informed!
I'm curious about Elegant Baby - I just called them 2-3 weeks ago about the squirties, and was told they are freeof BPA, PVC, and phtalates. I wonder if I am wording my questions in thw wrong way, or just talked to a customer service rep that had no clue?
TOMY USA has a line of tub toys, including a "water symphony"--toy dolphins that whistle as they are pushed down into the tub water. Thanks for preparing such a valuable post! http://www.tomy-usa.com/products.php?c=10
Thank you, thank you for this review. I love your web-site and have been waiting for info on bath toys.
Spielstabli is a Germany company that makes pvc-free bath toys, which are sold on Amazon. I attempted to contact the company to establish the BPA and phlatate status of their toys with no luck.
Keep up the great work :)
I'm curious about Fisher-Price too. My daughter's tub is made by them. I've called and one customer service person said she had no idea what I was talking about when I asked about BPA and phthalates and another person said there is none in any Fisher-Price stuff. What's true?
Another long time lurker coming out here, many thanks for all your hard work, I really get inspired reading your blog.
We have have one thing not mentioned above, a set of WEDGimal Ducks by ImagAbility, the makers of Wedgits, in my daughters bathtub.
The product brochure and Amazon.com say they are "Constructed of phthalate free poly-vinyl meeting US and European Safety standards".
Thanks again, you doing a great job.
I have some bath tub toys that are little squirts and the company name is Geoffry, Inc.
The worst thing of all....VINYL SHOWER CURTAINS!!! It's almost impossible to find a liner that's not made out of vinyl!
another lurker here with little time to write, hence the lurking..
thank you so much for all of your hard work, time, and energy. it is reassuring to me that someone will go that extra forty miles for our kids.
wondering if anyone has more info on infantino duckies? my son loves his, and i have been wary of them for some time.
thanks again..
I am wondering about MudPie rubber ducks. These particular ducks come in a package of three, with one bigger than the other two and I believe they light up. Are they PVC and Phthalate free? Thanks for any help here.
Any information on the Kelgar Snug Tub Deluxe? It is a blow up bathtub for toddlers.
What about Munchkin bath toys? Thanks for all the great information.
Any ideas about "StrikeZoneInc" rubber duckies? I have one that is a licensed Major League baseball team (Mariners) ducky, but can find no information on their website.
We have a couple of Streamline Ocean Squirt Bath Toys (http://www.amazon.com/Streamline-Ocean-Squirt-Bath-Toys/dp/B000PIZVE2/ref=sr_1_1) and our daughter loves to suck on the head of the turtle from that set. Does anyone know if those toys are safe? Thanks for doing all the info!
This is a great resource, thank you so much for taking the time to put it together.
In relation to bath 'toys', I'm wondering about plastic bath books? I'm assuming that they're all to be tossed (as well), but has anyone been able to find out any specifics on these products?
Do anyone know about the brand Parents? We have a bath toy "boat set". Thanks!
What about K's Kids bath toys?
http://www.kskids.com/
Keep up the good work! Thanks.
What about the Baby Einstein waterproof bath books, including What Floats?
Do "PHTHALATE-free PVC" toys etc still bear a dioxin risk? Seems potentially very scary! Thanks for all the great info.
I have three little boats that have The litle Tykes Company and Imperial brands on them and a ducky from Johnson & Johnson...just wondering about them. What about other toys made from plastic. It seems everytime I turn around he's playing with something that's plastic!
Alex Toys wrote me the following:
Thank you for your interest in ALEX toys. Please note that our toys are
subjected to and pass both US and International toy safety regulations.
We use PVC where applicable and allowed. This ensures that our toys are
both safe and fun to play with.
Our bath squirters are made from non-phthalate PVC. Our toys do not
contain BPA.

Kids II, the maker of Bright Starts toys, stated that "All of our teethers and toys are phthalate, BPA, PVC and latex free." "Plus ALL of our toys are tested by independent labs for lead and any other contaminants as well."
There's already an extensive list of bath toys by Munchkins. I was wondering if you can check on Munchkin Tower of Squirters Bath Toys.
Your research is helping a lot of concerned parents. Thank you!
Hi, Thanks for this. I always refer to your website given my focus is to ensure my baby doesn't use things that have BPA, PVC, or other plasticizers etc.
Would you please let me know if the following item has any BPA, PVCs, or phthalates in it. We use it to test the water temp for our baby's bath.
Bath Pal Thermometer - Duck or Sea Lion. By: Safety 1st. On the Babies R Us website, here is the product info.
SKN Number: 384321
Product UID: 9EA02B62
UPC/EAN/ISBN: 052181495076
Manufacturer #: 49507
Thank you!
Hello, would you pls also let me know if you have any info on Sassy Pelican Net & friends (bath/pool toys). Thanks!
Model #S111
I have a Safety 1st Color Change Ducky someone gave us as a gift. We would like to know if it is safe to use with our baby...
heatherlbrandt (at) verizon (dot) net
Thank goodness for this site!
My question sounds like so many others. We were just given a Brainy Baby bath book as a gift. It advertises "non-toxic" right on the package. Is it actually BPA and phthalate-free? If it's not, then I find the words "non-toxic" on the package particularly infuriating...
What about Bright Start bath toys (I know they are sold at Babies R Us) and Baby Einstein water books?
Thanks for all the information you provide!
Baby Einstein products are licensed out to different companies for manufacture. At least some of the teethers are made by KidsII and here is their response to me:
I understand you are inquiring about product materials. The materials in our products are latex free and meet global phthalate and BPA requirements. All of our products are tested to the most stringent U.S. and International standards, and we have devised our own tests and safety procedures to go beyond what many organizations call for. It is important for you to know that Kids II products are certified by accredited independent laboratories such as Intertek Testing Services (ITS) and Bureau Veritas (BV). Furthermore, Kids II is a family-run business. We have families of our own and we understand how important safety is to our customers. You can be assured that we will do everything we can to ensure your child has a happy, enjoyable and safe experience with our baby and infant products.
That duck's got horns... which makes me question how safe he is. I can picture it now. Kids leaves toy in tub, dad fills tub, dad sits down.
Chaos ensues.
i was wondering about all the bathtubs, as well.
be forewarned! it's time to update the SASSY list! some of those things are on the list actually have bpa according to the latest statement from SASSY!
What about Nuby bath toys? Could you please provide information on those too?
@Alison,
We updated this post to have the most current information from Sassy. The listings above reflect their latest and most definitive statements.
Do you know if Gerson Quacking Light-Up Duck contains bpa, pvc, phthalates? My daughter loves it-likes to put it in her mouth-we have taken it away because we don't know if it is safe.
