Please note: This report has been substantially revised and updated since this post was published, most recently in our ZRecs Guide to Safer Children's Products. Much of the information in this post is outdated, and we encourage you to refer instead to our new consumer guide to BPA and other potentially harmful chemicals in children's products, the ZRecs Guide.
The U.S. government asked manufacturers to voluntarily stop using phthalates in teethers back in 1999, and the potential endocrine-disrupting chemicals rapidly faded from teethers and mouth-contact infant toys, foreshadowing one possible fate of the similarly scary chemical Bisphenol-A. BPA, on the other hand, is in a few items by a few brands, and many companies still use phthalate-free PVC, which is emerging as a new material of potential concern and also takes a substantial toll on the environment and on factory workers due to the heavy use of chlorine in its production.
The good news is, there aren't many items out there that contain these substances. We think we have all the relevant companies here except Nuby, whom we've contacted but hasn't yet responded; we're also waiting on some more information from Manhattan Toy, which was able to tell us about a few products but says we should have info on the rest of them by Monday. We'll update this post when we have more information, and alert readers to the update in a new post. We're also working on updates to our Safer Bath Toy guide based on reader requests.
All of the images shown in the company listings below are BPA-, phthalate-, and PVC-free, but first we'll show you all of the products we found that do contain some of these avoidable substances.
Shortlist: Products to Avoid
Items reported by companies we surveyed as containing Bisphenol-A:

I contacted Nuby (through luvncare.com) and they sent me information. In the spreadsheet they sent me, the four teething products they listed are all BPA free and are: Icy Bite Key teethers; Cool Bite teether/pacifier; Plush Ice Gel Teether - varieties include a frog, elephant, pig, and alligator; and the Bug-a-loop teether.
Hope this helps!
What about Lamaze's Jacques the Peacock? ( Same type of toy as Freddie the Firelfly)
Also, I was under the impression that ALL Sassy items were BPA free. It seems weird that of their enitre line only this one rattle is.
What about Gerber teethers? I did see on another blog that the Gerber teether we bought was BPA, PVC free, but I'm still not 100% sure.
And other sassy rattles are they ok? the only one listed is the cirlce one
What about Geoffrey Inc products? It is the store brand for Toys R Us and Babies R Us.
thanks for this list! it is much appreciated.
How about "Especially for Baby" teethers? (I believe it is the Babies R Us brand). I'm also curious about Gerber teethers.
I am so sad. That one Sassy rattle was my daughter's and is now my son's FAVORITE toy. The design is just perfect. Urgh. Thanks as always for the great info!
I am so relieved the teether I bought in a moment of weakness (and painful nibbled fingers!) at the grocery store is on the safe list...
How about The First Years or Bright Stars teethers? I have lots of those and I'm worried now.
Does anyone know about those primary-colored necklaces? They're pretty common, but I don't know who makes them. They are make of plastic elongated/oval "beads", but is not long enough to actually fit around the neck.
Any word on Baby Einstein/Kids II Inc/Bright Starts? We have the BE Caterpillar Cooling Water-filled Teether. I find myself thinking it prb has BPA?? Anyone know?
Also interested in the status of Bright Starts-- we have the Starry Teether and the Twisty Bug. Thanks.
jeske_posse- sounds like the Bright Starts Teethe on Me. Here's the link:
http://www.brightstarts.com/BSSub14x53x1x8667.aspx
Are all Lamaze toys (except for the ones listed under the Learning Curve section) safe?
What about the JeJe Therapeutic Teether???? My son loves anything that vibrates, but I want to make sure it is safe first :)
I emailed Bright Starts for information about their teethers. This is the response I received:
"Thank you for contacting Kids II about your questions and concerns about our products.
All of our teethers and toys are phthalate, BPA, PVC and latex free.
Plus, ALL of our toys are tested by independent labs for lead and any other contaminants."
I have emailed The First Years about their teethers. They said : Massaging water teether Phthalate free pvc-citroflex is used and no latex.
I'm curious about The First Years teethers - my son has one that is his favorite. It's a primary colored ring (much like what jeske_posse described). It is not a water-filled teether.
Thanks as always for the wonderful, helpful info!
Contacted Sassy on a few things.:
Mam pacifiers with the knobs, both the guard and the knobs have bpa.
Sassy formula dispenser is BPA free
And zrecs has listed Teething Wing Butterfly, by sassy as bpa free but the clear part that holds the beads in the middle of the butterfly was made out of polycarbonate making it have bpa....
oh and i emailed sassy about the circle rattle and they got back to me within hours. if you have the receipt they will give you your money back, but if you dont they will give you credit to get another sassy product...
Sorry folks, Learning Curve is the parent company of The First Years - we should have labeled that entry more helpfully. We'll update it. Meanwhile, check and see if the specific product you're interested in was covered there - please note we have a separate post for bath toys but currently have pacifiers listed in the main Z Report under the company name.
Post updated 4/30/2008. ZRecs called Sassy and confirmed that the Teething Wing Butterfly is BPA-free but the CSR stated that the Teething Wing Dragonfly does contain BPA. This information on the Dragonfly contradicts information previously reported to Z Recommends.
I called Gerber and they said that the duck teether and the ring (which is soft like the duck with circles all around) is made of ethylene vinyl acetate also known as EVA. I guess that's ok?!?
I just spoke with Sassy. They said that their infant feeding products are Bisphenol-A free (such as spoons, bowls, etc.) However heating bisphenol-A containing products is the problem, so some of their products that don't go into the dishwasher or microwave might have it. I too was under the impression that all of their products were safe.
So, teething rings may contain this toxin, as well as other products because they are not heated. The monkey teether, monkey rattle etc. contain bisphenol-A. Cuddle and Chew Pals ARE SAFE.
You may need to call to find out for each product. Also, Babies R Us is going to only carry Bisphenol-A free products after this summer! :-) I know that heating the plastic is the worst, but I still don't want my child sucking on or chewing the plastic containing bishphenol-A. Who knows if that will be safe.
It says here that the ocean wonders portable mobile (the octopus with 3 hanging toys by fisher price) is pvc free, but at www.healthytoys.org a test showed that it contains 224,364 ppm of pvc, as well as arsenic, tin, and bromine. Who is right?!?
Can you find out if the Winkel by Manhattan Toy is BPA free? Many thanks,
MW
The US Distributor for Vulli has noted that Sophie & the other teethers are BPA, PVC & phthalate free.
@Anonymous (most recent): If you can put us in touch with the company, we'd love to speak with them - we independently verify all information in our reports.
The list shows that Fisher Price has no teethers that contain BPA or pthlalates (Contains phthalates or BPA: No teethers),
but on the healthy toys site they tested the Ocean Wonders gum soother (Fisher Price) and found Chlorine/PVC in the clear segments. Not sure what to think. If no teethers contain it, why list some individually? Just trying to get the most out of the list.
I talked to Sassy about the circle rattle since I rec'd it recently as a gift and BRU sells it. They said that the "old" circle rattle/teether w/ clear plastic encasing the small balls are "bad", but that they now make them with orange plastic and they're fine. (The picture on this site shows the one with the orange plastic...)
Has anyone heard about Circo products? I bought a water teether but don't see it on the list. I can't find any contact info either.
Your help is appreciated!
Does anyone know about "Parent's Choice" It is a WalMart Brand I think. What about "Bright Stars"?
BTW: I've seen a lot of questions about Sassy Teethers. I emailed them directly and the response was that all of their teethers are BPA, PVC and Phthalate free with the exception of some teethers with clear plastic beads. These beads are made of polycarbonate (BPA). Hope that helps!
I contacted Sassy about their circle rattles and was given a list of six products that have bpa:peek a boo pals, flipper gripper rattle, fascination station, illumination station, fishy fascination station, and the mirror surface on toys with mirrors. You have several people with comments that say otherwise and your pic shows the new circle rattle and dragonfly teether as containing bpa. There is at least six different answers for the same question! Can you please get to the bottom of this and find out which Sassy products are actually harmful! These rattle are our favorites!Thank you!-Kristy- 7/02/08
@Kristy -
We contacted Sassy over a month and a half ago with a request for their Quality Control to verify our published data. I've been in touch with them several times since then (most recently 3 days ago) and have still not received an answer. We'll update as soon as we can get confirmation from Sassy and if Sassy is unwilling to confirm, we'll post that information as well.
Best, Jennifer

Do you know anything about Haba teethers and rattles? Thanks!
Check some of these toys thru HealthyToys.org as well.
The Fisher Price Portable Mobile: Ocean Wonders did indeed test at Medium for Chlorine/PVC

Re: Circo water teether ... looks like it's iffy. I own it too but am throwing out - why risk it?
http://healthytoys.org/product.details.php?getrecno=144
Does anyone know about the Safety 1st "Fingers and Toes" teethers?
Or the FisherPrice teether with a blue sailboat on top?
Thanks!
I saw on another website that the sassy dragonfly was bpa free. Can you verify that it does?
What about the fischer price deluxe gum soother ocean wonders model #H9451. I'm guess it has BPA, but cannot find any info that says it does or does not.
i know it's nearly august, but ijust stumbled upon this post. it's nice to know that most teethers are bpa pvc free, but what about lead? they are all made in china.
Has anyone come across any information on Baby Einstein teethers yet? Are they safe to use?
I contacted the Vulli distributor to know what's in the Rattle Key CPGbteether and she said that the body of the rattle is made from PS (polustyrene choc)
inside and rings: PP (polypropylene)
What is this supposed to mean?
We're working on a new edition of our Z Report which will encompass all of this information as well as answers to many of the questions readers have asked here. Sorry for our silence on many specific questions - we unfortunately have to treat personalized responses as a lower priority than new content, and we hope our updated edition will resolve many of these questions for you all.
I contacted Manhattan toys about the winkel. Here is their response.
"Katie,
Thank you for contacting Manhattan Toy, The Winkel is manufactured with PU tubing. As such, it does not contain PVC (phthalates) or Polycarbonate (BPA). In general I can’t say that all of our toys are BPA, and PVC free. I can say that our toys are safe and meet the safety requirements that are put forth by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the European Union (EN71). If you have another toy you are inquiring about, please send me an email and I can let you know if it contains BPA, or PVC.
Best Regards,
Tomeko "
Did anyone ever find out about "especially for baby" brand line of teethers? Are they BPA and PVC free?
Do you know about the Manhattan Baby Shooting Star rattle?
In case anyone else is wondering, here's what Mantattan Toy say about the Shooting Star Rattle:
Thank you for contacting Manhattan Toy, in response to your inquiry about the Shooting Star Rattle- The Shooting Star Rattle has a polycarbonate component, so it may contain some level of BPA. With that being said, I want to reassure you that all of our toys have been tested and meet/exceed the requirements put forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials and the European Union. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Warm regards,
Tomeko
I contacted sassy about the circle rattle and the dragonfly teether. Anything before 2006 contains toxins. The new ones DO NOT. Please call them so you can figure out if yours do or do not have toxins.
Does anyone know if the First Years Star Terry Teething Blanket is BPA free? Thanks.
