Let's All Scream For Play Ice Cream

Honestly, which would you rather have?

Okay, okay, we aren't being fair to the real stuff. Consider the McDonald's soft-serve our version of the slouched, sallow-faced "before" photos for weight-loss programs or nutritional supplements. Please note, however, that our indulgence of choice, the polyester cone at above right, has zero calories.

Made in Germany by Haba, these new ice cream cones feature reversible scoops.

Cones are made from firm plastic with a polyester covering (outer and inner).

Here's another one we sampled:

The pair of cones (that's two cones and two reversible ice cream scoops) sell for about $12. Z is smitten and plays ice cream shop on a regular basis. To be fair, these may not be completely free of calories - I've noticed our family's real ice cream consumption see an uptick recently, and can't entirely absolve these toys of responsibility. Then again, maybe it's just the 100-degree heat index.

Oompa Toys carries them, and they go in and out of stock. If you're looking for something cheaper that still isn't the ugly plastic cone at top center (part of a $20 fake food set) you might try Haba's minimalist wooden ice cream cones, which sell for a mere $2 a pop. Hess makes a $6 ice cream cone holder; the only other thing you'd need to run a proper mock ice cream parlor is a cash register. The range of options here is staggering - and boy, does this one take me back to my childhood:

Anyone have a favorite pretend play cash register to recommend? Tell us what it is, and why you like it so much (I mean, why your kid likes it), in the comments!

My son is 3.5 and he loves the Learning Resources cash register. It's got lots of bells and whistles we haven't used yet (math games and such), but E loves the scale and the little credit card swiping spot that beeps. Lots of fun!

My daughter is 2.5 and she likes her Parents brand Cash Register. It's "old school" style buttons, working drawer, and digital display work well for us. It even functions as a calculator!

The FP one pictured is the upgraded model to the one that my sister and I played with as young girls. I can still remember the sound that the fake coins made as we threw them across the room!

I loved my old fisher price cash register...too bad they still don't make them.

Sammie(2.5) likes the Parents register. It has lots of buttons and a cash drawer tha opens. It is also a working calculator. The play money that comes with it, she's not yet ready for and easily bends and creases.

I agree with Karla- those old Fisher-Price cash registers are great. It's very similar to the one you show in your post (though mine is in 70s tones of plastic has woodgrain stickers with squirrels and kids dancing under a money tree).

My mom kept mine and my 2.75 year old LOVES playing with it.

More about the ice cream cones, if you're that sort of person, you can also knit them. :)

Very cool! We only have the "ugly ones" and my son plays ice cream shop all the time!

Check out the
Selecta Cash Register for a "natural" (not plastic) option.
